A treatment that combines intravenous photosensitizer injection with specific-wavelength laser activation to selectively close abnormal neovascularization.
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves intravenous injection of the photosensitizer verteporfin (Visudyne), which accumulates in choroidal neovascularization. A 689nm non-thermal laser then activates the drug in the lesion area, generating reactive oxygen species that selectively damage neovascular endothelial cells, causing vessel closure. PDT minimally affects surrounding normal tissue and is suitable for specific AMD subtypes (polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy/PCV) and certain macular neovascularization. Strict light avoidance for 48 hours post-treatment is required.

Who Is This For
Step-by-Step Process

Establish IV access; slowly infuse verteporfin (6mg/m² BSA) over 10 minutes.
Wait 5 minutes after infusion for drug concentration in neovascularization.
Apply 689nm laser to the lesion area through slit-lamp and contact lens for 83 seconds (spot size covering lesion extent).
Instruct patient on strict 48-hour avoidance of sunlight and bright light, including skin exposure.
Evaluation typically every 3 months; repeat treatment based on angiography and OCT findings. Often combined with anti-VEGF injections.

What's Included
Public tier-3A International Medical Department: approximately ¥8,000-13,000 per session (including verteporfin); premium private eye centers: approximately ¥13,000-18,000 per session. Verteporfin is an imported drug accounting for the majority of the cost.
Before Your Visit
If you already have recent valid test results, bring the reports. If not, these assessments can usually be completed in China before the procedure.
FFA and ICG angiography
OCT examination
Visual acuity testing
Liver function tests
Required to Bring
Passport and valid visa
Previous angiography records
Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (for post-treatment light avoidance)
Accompaniment needed on treatment day due to light restriction limiting mobility.
After Treatment
Strictly avoid sunlight and bright light for 48 hours (including indoor bright light)
Wear wide hat, dark sunglasses, gloves, and long sleeves outdoors
Gradual return to normal light exposure after 48 hours
Mild injection site discomfort possible
Seek immediate care if vision declines
Follow-up at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. May need repeat treatment based on disease status.
