Chalazion Excision

Meibomian Cyst RemovalChalazion Surgery

An outpatient minor surgery to incise, drain, and curet granulomatous tissue from a chalazion through the inner eyelid surface, leaving no external scar.

Chalazion excision is the standard treatment for chalazia unresponsive to conservative management. Surgery is typically performed from the conjunctival surface (inner eyelid), curetteing granulomatous tissue and the cyst wall without any external skin incision or scarring. Performed under local anesthesia in approximately 10-20 minutes. Children may require topical or brief general anesthesia. Recovery is rapid with normal activities in 1-3 days. For elderly patients with recurrence at the same site, excised tissue should be sent for pathology to rule out meibomian gland carcinoma.
