The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Ruijin Hospital was founded in 1952 and has long undertaken clinical diagnosis and treatment, research, and teaching for respiratory diseases. It was an early adopter of rigid and fiberoptic bronchoscopy and the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders, and established a respiratory intensive care unit. The department continues to strengthen its specialist capabilities for common, complex, and critical respiratory conditions. Developed over successive generations by experts including Sun Tongnian, Hu Zengji, Deng Weiwu, Huang Shaoguang, and Wan Huanying, it gives equal emphasis to clinical care, research, and teaching and has formed a sustainable pipeline of respiratory specialists.

The Department of Nephrology at Ruijin Hospital was founded in 1965 and became an independent department in 1976. It comprises four divisions: clinical care, pathology, laboratories, and dialysis. The department combines the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, pathological and experimental research, dialysis therapy, and specialist physician education. It is also a national clinical pharmacology base and a postgraduate training platform in nephrology. The discipline is recognized as a key discipline by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and Shanghai Municipality, and was among the earlier institutions authorized to confer master's and doctoral degrees in nephrology and to establish a postdoctoral research station.

The Department of Neurology at Ruijin Hospital was founded in 1963 and now provides diagnosis and treatment in movement disorders, cognitive impairment, cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, sleep disorders, neuroimmunology, and neuromuscular diseases. It operates technical platforms for neuroelectrophysiology and neuromuscular pathology and undertakes national specialty development and professional training. The discipline is a National Key Clinical Specialty, a cultivation discipline for the Ministry of Education's National Key Disciplines, and a key discipline under Project 211. It also hosts national specialist physician training and Shanghai resident and specialist physician training bases.

With more than 70 years of academic development, the Department of Gastroenterology at Ruijin Hospital comprises outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, an endoscopy center, a gastrointestinal motility unit, and a digestive disease laboratory. It focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, early gastrointestinal cancer, pancreatic diseases, gastrointestinal motility disorders, and complex digestive diseases, using gastrointestinal endoscopy to support early detection and minimally invasive treatment. The discipline became authorized to confer master's and doctoral degrees in 1980 and 1984 respectively, established a postdoctoral research station in 2000, and was designated a Ministry of Education Key Discipline and a National Key Clinical Specialty.

The Department of Cardiology at Ruijin Hospital was founded in 1952. Comprising cardiology, hypertension, and associated research institutes, it is both a National Key Discipline and a National Key Clinical Specialty. The department has developed clinical areas in coronary intervention, cardiac pacing and electrophysiology, structural heart disease, and peripheral vascular intervention, and undertakes clinical care, teaching, and research for complex cardiovascular diseases. It has 103 clinical and research personnel, including 12 doctoral supervisors and 14 master's supervisors, forming a professional pipeline that spans clinical practice, research, and postgraduate education.

The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Ruijin Hospital was founded in the 1950s and has long conducted clinical care, teaching, and research in endocrine and metabolic diseases. Its clinical teaching is based on three inpatient areas, a multidisciplinary diabetic foot diagnosis and treatment center, and emergency department rotations. In cooperation with urology, neurosurgery, nuclear medicine, pathology, and other specialties, it organizes discussions of complex and rare cases. The department has undertaken nationwide specialist physician training since 1978. It provides tiered development pathways through clinical fellowships, advanced fellowships, and continuing education, while multidisciplinary complex-case discussions broaden education in endocrine and metabolic diseases.

The Department of Hematology at Ruijin Hospital was founded in 1952, and the Shanghai Institute of Hematology was established in 1987. Together they form an academic system integrating clinical diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases, translational research, and professional education. The department is a National Key Discipline and a National Key Clinical Specialty. It has built clinical platforms including hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of hematologic diseases. Drawing on the Shanghai Institute of Hematology and a State Key Laboratory, the discipline conducts translational research and has developed a clinical research ward within a national major science and technology infrastructure, connecting basic research with clinical care.

The Department of General Surgery at Ruijin Hospital conducts clinical and translational research on gastrointestinal, pancreatic, colorectal, thyroid, and breast diseases. Its key areas include comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of gastric and pancreatic cancers, optimization of laparoscopic procedures for gastrointestinal tumors, application of minimally invasive surgical robots and fluorescence laparoscopy, and research into tumor development, metastasis, and precision therapy. The department has several postdoctoral co-supervisors whose research covers pancreatic cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, thyroid cancer, and breast cancer. Multiple tumor and minimally invasive research teams jointly support its translational research.
